our yoga class offerings in colorado springs
Rocket is an Ashtanga Vinyasa System. Founded by the the late Larry Schultz as a way to make Ashtanga accessible to the West. He studied under Patthabi Jois, in Mysore, India for many years before moving back to San Francisco. Here he opened one of the first SF studios. He was contacted by the Greatful Dead to be their touring yoga teacher. They quickly became bored with traditional Primary Series Ashtanga and asked for something different. This is where Rocket was born, and coined "The Rocket" by Bob Weir because "it gets you there faster." Larry developed the 3 beloved Rocket sequences we know and love today.
Rocket 1 which is based in primary series, focuses on forward folds, the classic jump through and back and more.
Rocket 2 is based in Secondary series Ashtanga with focus on back bending and more.
Rocket 3 is a combination of 1 and 2 and affectionately known as the "happy hour"
We offer all 3 sequences here. If you see a class that just says Rocket, it could be 1 or 2 and denotes a foundations based ALL LEVELS class.
Each sequence contains the opportunity for flight with inversions and arm balancing options with mini in class workshop options. Each includes traditional Sun Salutations A and B and longer classes include full traditional finishing sequence.
Rocket, like Ashtanga is based in Tristana which is our breath, bandhas and drishti. We focus on connecting deeply to our Ujjayi (yogic breathing) thoughout our Asana practice as way to drop into your body and begin to move like nature, fluid like an ocean wave.
When practiced with regulation and awareness, our Ashtanga Yoga practice begins to grow. There are 6 series of postures in the Ashtanga practice, each one a prerequisite for the next, and each gradually increasing in level of difficulty. The sequences are signalized by flow style, practicing the postures continoulsly from beginning to finish, using our breath to count holds, and moving from one pose to another on each inhale or exhale. We will continuously establish a well founded space for the mind body strengthening postures. The orchestrates balance of strength and flexibility, lightness and heaviness. The simultaneous engagement of our bandhas (internal energy gates), use of drishti (focal point), breath and movement cultivate a harmonious symphony of unity.
First series we practice is primary series which will refine your practice no matter what your preferred style is. Build strength, loosen tight hamstrings and hips and bring you into a state of moving mediation.
Mysore is a place to practice Ashtanga in a non LED class. Beginning with opening chant at 5:30 am and ending at 7:30 am. Students may arrive anytime to begin practice. The teacher is not guiding the class. This allows the teacher to work with you one on one in the group to help with poses. We have primary series charts for reference to use.
Modified Primary Series Ashtanga
This series is offered to beginners of both Rocket and Ashtanga methods, this is a modification of primary series as taught by Larry Schultz. Reducing the difficulty by taking out a lot of the deep hip openers and vinyasa between sides. It is designed to be finished in 60 minutes with plenty of time to help alignment. The shorter duration allows beginners to maintain strength and saftey through their progression without ever extending their endurance levels or joint mobility. Different from half primary series, modified primary gives students a complete series that focuses on the flow.
Vinyasa means "to place in a special way." Modern Vinyasa flow was born from the Ashtanga tradition. Like both Ashtanga and Rocket, Vinyasa uses the synchronicity of breath and movement. As opposed to Ashtanga and Rocket, Vinyasa teachers create their own unique sequences with no two classes being the same.
Grow with the Flow
This class is Vinyasa inspired to support all levels of practitioners in growing their personal practice. Through controlled, intentional movement, students will the opportunity to grow their current asana practice in a safe, supportive atmosphere. This class will help to build more awareness, mobility, strength and flexibility while working towards a "peak" posture. There will be an emphasis on linking breath to movement while practicing safe alignment to empower the entire physical form.
This a great place to start for students new to Vinyasa and wanting to start slowly. Deliberate movement and mindful breath is the focus of this class. This is a wonderful opportunity to slow down and tune into your body, mind and spirit. This class is appropriate for all levels of practitioners, from beginners to advanced students looking to relax and turn inward.
Movement and Meditation
Movement and meditation begins with a 30 minute flow to move stagnant energy and clam the mind, followed by 30 minutes of guided meditation to lead you towards balance and peace within.
A more gentle practice with longer holds of poses. Physically yin yoga is working on our connective tissues and fascia, we hold poses for 3-7 minutes to allow release to happen. Can help with pain, flexibility, insomnia, anxiety and more. Yin is amazing for releasing the connective tissue, fascia and pain in the body. Yin yoga is based in Traditional Chinese Medicine and works to move energy along our meridian pathways, which can also help to move various emotions. (Grief, sadness, anger, fear and anxiety.) This is a class you can come to spur of the moment with neck, back, shoulder, hip, or any pain and can count on the teacher working a pose in just for you. Great for rehabilitation from injury, stress relief, insomnia and so much more.
Restorative Yoga focuses on releasing deep tension in the body by holding poses for a longer time with props such as blocks and bolsters. We may do a restorative flow at the beginning of class to warm the muscles before going into poses focused on releasing tension in the legs, hips and lower back.
For all classes currently please bring all of your own props as we are not allowed to share ours with you at this time. You can substitute bolsters for restorative and yin with pillows and house blankets if needed from home. We have a limited supply of used, clean props in studio you may purchase (cash only)
Please respect we can not issue any refunds.
